What we do

Fences, gates and decking. Nothing we don’t do well.

Six things, done the same way every time: concrete posts, gravel boards, stainless fixings and a tidy site at the end of the day.

New close-board fence panels01

Close-board fencing

Featheredge boards on arris rails, built on site so there are no weak panel joints. The strongest fence for a windy garden.

  • Concrete posts
  • Gravel boards
  • Any height to 2m
Horizontal slatted fence close up02

Slatted & contemporary

Horizontal or vertical slats in treated softwood, cedar or composite. Clean lines that suit a modern garden and still keep the neighbours out of view.

  • Softwood or cedar
  • Hit-and-miss
  • Trellis tops

Gates

Side gates, driveway gates and garden gates made to match the fence, hung on proper hinges so they still shut in five years.

  • Side & driveway
  • Made to measure
  • Locks fitted
Timber deck with outdoor furniture and a fire pit04

Decking

Timber or composite decks on a proper joist frame with the right fall, so they drain and don’t bounce. Steps, balustrades and lighting if you want them.

  • Timber or composite
  • Steps & rails
  • Raised or ground level

Repairs & storm damage

Blown-down panels, snapped posts and leaning runs. We make it safe fast, then fix it properly rather than propping it up.

  • Safe in 48 hrs
  • Fixed within a week
  • Insurance paperwork

Posts, removal & clearance

Rotten posts replaced in concrete, old fences taken down and taken away, hedges cleared to make room for the new line.

  • Postcrete set
  • Old fence removed
  • Hedge-outs

Fence planner

Sketch your fence. See what it takes.

Set the length, pick a height and a style, and watch it draw. It works out the bays, the posts and roughly how long we’d be on site, so the first conversation is about your garden, not the basics.

A sketch, not a survey. Slopes, hedges and awkward corners change things, which is why we come and look before we price anything.

Decking

Timber or composite? Here’s the honest difference.

Both are good decks when they’re built on a proper frame. They just want different things from you afterwards.

Looks
Real wood that silvers over time unless you oil it. Warm underfoot and easy to live with.
Upkeep
A clean and an oil every spring. Skip it and it greys, not fails.
Lasts
15 years or so with a bit of care, longer under a cover.
Grip
Good when it’s clean. Grooved boards and a yearly wash keep the algae off.

Our take: if you like the ritual of looking after it and want the real thing, timber. If you want to lay it and forget it, composite.

About us

Two brothers, one van, and a lot of postcrete.

Thornhill Fencing & Decking is Lee and Dan Crowther, from Thornhill, working out of Ossett. Lee did ten years with a landscaping firm before the pair set up on their own in 2015. Dan is the one who’ll answer when you ring.

We only do fencing and decking. Not patios, not turf, not driveways. It means we’ve put in a few thousand posts and we know exactly how deep they need to go in Wakefield clay.

Concrete posts, always offeredTimber if you prefer the look. We’ll tell you the difference in ten years.
We’ll turn up when we saidAnd ring you if the weather changes it. No silence.
Your neighbour’s side mattersWe check whose fence it is and knock on their door before we start.

How it works

From a photo of the boundary to the last post.

Most fences are quoted within two days and built within three weeks. Storm repairs jump the queue.

  1. 01

    Send a photo

WhatsApp a picture of the run and roughly how long it is. We’ll tell you the same day whether we can help and when.

  2. 02

    We come and look

Dan measures the run, checks the ground, the levels and whose fence it is, and talks through heights and styles.

  3. 03

    A written quote

One fixed price with the post type, the height and the removal of the old fence spelled out.

  4. 04

    Build and tidy

Most runs take one to three days. The old fence goes with us and you get the guarantee in writing.

“Storm took three panels on the Friday. Photo sent Saturday morning, made safe Saturday afternoon, new concrete posts and panels in by Wednesday. Next door’s is still on the floor.”

“The deck is dead level and the steps are the same height all the way down, which the last one wasn’t. They sorted the fence posts next door’s side was leaning on while they were at it.”

“Slatted fence down the whole side of the garden in two days. Looks like it cost twice what it did. Gate shuts with a click.”

Before you book

The things people ask over the fence.

If yours isn’t here, ring Dan. He’s probably been asked it this week.

Concrete posts or timber posts?

Concrete, unless you really want the look of timber. Timber posts rot at ground level in eight to twelve years and that’s what brings a fence down. Concrete posts and gravel boards mean the panels never touch wet ground.

How high can a garden fence be?

Two metres at the back and sides without planning permission, and one metre at the front next to a road. Trellis on top counts towards the height. If you need more than two metres for privacy, we can talk about planting or a screen.

Whose fence is it?

Your deeds will usually show a T on the side that owns the boundary. If it isn’t clear, we check on the visit and we always knock on next door before we start. Most neighbours are glad someone’s finally sorting it.

How long does a fence take?

A typical back garden of twenty to thirty metres is one to two days including taking the old one down. Decking is usually two to four days depending on the size and the steps.

Do you take the old fence away?

Yes, every job. Old panels, posts, concrete and the bag of offcuts all go in the van. Nothing is left for you to get rid of.

What does the guarantee cover?

Five years on posts, panels and fixings against failure. It doesn’t cover a neighbour leaning a shed on it or a lorry reversing into it, but we’ll still come and fix that for a fair price.
